The top seeds in both the men's and women's draws at the US Open advanced with relative ease on Thursday. Men's top player Novak Djokovic secured his 62nd victory out of 64 matches this year while Caroline Wozniacki survived a second set tiebreaker to advance to the final four. Wozniacki defeated German 10th seed Andrea Petkovic 6-1 7-6 on Thursday and set up a U.S. Open semi-final showdown against her role model, Serena Williams. The Danish number one, who is aiming to win a maiden major title, was serving for the match at 5-3 in the second but lost three games in a row before recovering to break Petkovic in the 12th game to force a tiebreaker, which she took 7-5. Coming off a titanic struggle against former US Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fourth round, Wozniacki adjusted quickly after her match was shifted to Court 13 when a wet patch on Louis Armstrong Stadium court would not dry. The win sets up a showdown with American Serena Williams, who cruised to victory earlier in the day. After battling through two arduous sets, with each winning in a tiebreaker, Djokovic won the third set 6-0 before Tipsarevic retired midway through the fourth. With Serbia playing in the semifinals of the Davis Cup the following week, he wanted to save himself rather than put more wear on his injured left hamstring. “That's his decision,” Djokovic said. “You know, I cannot comment on that. “I support anything he does because he's my friend and I know him well, and I know he's somebody who doesn't like to retire.” The Serb will now face the winner of the Roger Fedder and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. As of 10:30 PM in New York, Federer was leading 6-4, 6-3. BM
