Iran executed three men on Sunday for engaging in homosexual acts in the province of Ahwaz. The three men, not identified, were hanged at the Karoun prison along with three other men, according to a press release. The prosecutor accused the men of sodomy and rape as it is easier to sell the case of execution to the court than sodomy, where it is almost unheard of. Two of the other men were charged with robbery and rape, the third was put to death for drug trafficking. Iranian president Ahmadinejad said that homosexuals “don't exist in Iran” in a speech he gave at Colombia university in the United States. Human rights activists say the province has higher rates due to the Arab persecution at the hands of the Iranian authorities. Daniel Brett, Director of the Ahwazi Arab Solidarity Network said that another reason is how prisoners from other parts of the country are hanged secretly in the infamous Karuon Prison. The Sunni province of Ahwaz has the highest number of executions taken place in Iran. BM
