CAIRO: The United States is hoping that a visit by Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, who arrived in Cairo on Monday will help defuse tension between Egypt and Israel after last weeks border incident that left five Egyptians dead. The visit was scheduled to attempt to calm tensions between Egyptian and Israeli diplomats after the border events at the Israeli—Egyptian border. It comes as anti-Israel protests in Egypt demanded the Israeli ambassador to the country be expelled by the government. Feltman will hold meetings with Egyptian officials to discuss the latest crisis in light of street protests in front of the Israeli embassy in Cairo inflamed tensions throughout the country. On early Sunday morning, an Egyptian activist scaled the building housing the Israeli embassy in Giza, replaced the Israeli flag with the Egyptian flag and burned the flag. He is being dubbed Egypt's “Flagman.” Feltman's visit coincides with the visit of an Israeli delegation to the country. BM
