Telecom is booming in Egypt. China's Huawei Technologies reported on Monday that they had sold nearly 100,000 mobile phones in the country during the past four months. According to the company, 30,000 of those handsets were sold directly to clients through agents, while the additional 70,000 came from mobile operators currently in contract with the Chinese firm. Alaa Ahmed, Director of Marketing in the Middle East and North Africa, said that the market in Egypt is currently recovering from difficult times, following the unrest that toppled the government in February. Ahmed, in a statement to journalists, said that mobile phones are still “accessories to many Egyptians, yet smart phones are finding a broader market after the January 25 revolution and the desire to connect to various social networking websites.” Huawei has been in Egypt since 2000 and now it houses its Middle East and North African operations in Cairo. Ahmed added that the company is the top provider of USB modems in Egypt and announced that the company would be presenting its clients with more tablets and “options after it proved success in other parts of the region.” BM
