CAIRO: Former Egyptian Finance Minister Yousef Boutros-Ghali has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in absentia, the country's official MENA news agency reported on Saturday. He was convicted of squandering public funds and abusing his authority. Boutros-Ghali fled Egypt during the 18-days of protests that led to the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak. His whereabouts are unknown. He is the latest former top regime official to be convicted. Already the former Minister of Tourism Zohair Ghoneim and much hated Interior Minister Habib al-Adly have been convicted and sentenced to jail. The former minister was convicted on two separate cases. In one, MENA reported he was found guilty of appropriating luxury vehicles seized from the customs authority. In another, he was convicted of abusing his authority by using state print shops to produce campaign material. In each case, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was fined $6 million. Also Saturday, an Egyptian prosecutor referred to criminal court the cases of 48 Muslims and Christians for their suspected roles in an interfaith feud that killed 12 people and left a church burned.
