CAIRO: The foreign ministry announced on Tuesday that Italy arrested at least 128 illegal Egyptian immigrants, 68 of whom are underage. The Italian authorities said the boat was carrying the immigrants that set off from Kafr el-Sheikh governorate in the Nile Delta, and were arrested in Catania, Sicily. Assistant Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdel Hakam said that Italian authorities have deported 60 of the immigrants back to Egypt, without trial or imprisonment. The immigrants came from the provinces of Sharqiya, Minya and Assiut, he said. Abdel Hakam added that Italy decided to keep 68 minors in custody as Italian law prohibits the deportation of illegal migrants who are minors and punishes unlawful immigrants with fines, detention or deportation. On February 16, Italian authorities deported 94 undocumented Egyptian migrants. BM
