An ABC News reporter was beaten as he attempted to cover the violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrator's in Bahrain's capital, Manama, on Tuesday. Miguel Marquez was attacked by police in the city, the news network said. Marquez said he was not badly injured, but he was hit with billy clubs and his camera was pulled from his hands while he yelled, “Journalist, journalist!” — trying to show he was not a protester. Marquez was the latest Western journalist to be attacked covering protests in the Arab world, which have spread from Tunisia to Egypt and, now, to Bahrain and other countries. Marquez was on the phone to ABC News in New York when it happened. “There was a canister that looked like — No! No! No! Hey! I'm a journalist here!” he yelled. “I'm going! I'm going! I'm going! I'm going!,” he said. “I'm hit. “I just got beat rather badly by a gang of thugs,” Marquez said later. “I'm now in a marketplace near our hotel where people are cowering in buildings.” Violence in the country has spiraled out of control since police began firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowds of protesters. At least two people have been killed since demonstrations began on Monday. BM
