CAIRO: The newly-appointed Health Minister Ahmed Farid announced that the total number of injured protesters recorded during Friday's “Day of Departure” protests stood at 28 through early evening on Friday. Overall, since demonstrations began on January 25, at least 5000 people have been injured. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the number of those killed could be as high as 300. Farid said that all the injured had been released from hospitals after receiving treatment, except two, who were still being treated for bone fractures. The minister added that the total number of injured to have been treated at hospitals since Wednesday reached 1,134. He reported that 11 people have been killed since Wednesday in ongoing protests and clashes between pro- and ant-Mubarak protesters. Farid visited Tahrir Square where he inspected ambulances, medical supplies and injured demonstrators receiving treatment in mobile field hospitals on Friday afternoon during the Day of Departure protest. The majority of injuries were caused by blows from stones and other objects, while the number of people injured by gunfire was comparatively low, Farid said in statements quoted by official government media.
