CAIRO: 100 million Egyptian Pounds (US $17.8 million) have been allocated for the purchase and installation of surveillance cameras throughout Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, announced the Egyptian parliament. Amin Rady, Chairman of parliament's Defense and National Security Committee, said on Monday that the cameras will monitor all of the city's entrances, exits, public squares and landmarks. He also noted that the Interior Ministry planned to heighten security in and around the nation's churches, especially during Christian feasts and holidays. The moves come after the New Year's Eve bombing of a Coptic church in Alexandria that killed 23 people and left 100 injured. BM
