Long an outspoken vegan, Bones actress Emily Deschanel has spoken out in support of World Go Vegan Week in an effort to put a popular face to the weeklong event to promote a greener and cruelty free planet. World Go Vegan Week is in its fifth year – an initiative begun by the nonprofit organization In Defense of Animals. The goal of the week is to promote a vegan diet and its purpose in today's world. According to Deschanel, it was a no-brainer to join the festivities. She has long spoken on the health, environmental and animal welfare benefits of the plant-based diet. “The 5th annual World Go Vegan Week is taking place this year from October 24th through 31st,” Deschanel told reporters late last week in announcing her support. “This week is a celebration of compassion and a time to take action for animals, the environment and everyone's well-being. A plant-based diet not only improves your health, it significantly reduces your carbon footprint and preserves resources for future generations. So please join me in creating a healthy future and go vegan for World Go Vegan Week.” IDA has called on people to take the Vegan Pledge. Non-vegans would sign a letter stating that for the week they would go vegan and try out the diet. According to the IDA website, the goal of the World Go Vegan Week is to “encourage people to use World Go Vegan Week to educate their community about the vegan lifestyle as a compassionate, sustainable, and healthy way of eating and living. Promoting veganism through outreach events and the media, we know that our annual World Go Vegan Week is helping make the word ‘vegan' a household word, universally recognized as meaning love and compassion for all living beings.” The group is helping local organizer plan events, including dinners, across the country and hopes to see the movement spread globally with more and more people removing animal products from their diet.
