CAIRO: Admiral Ahmed Ali Fadel, the head of the Suez Canal Authority, said that Suez Canal revenues during September amounted to $410.2 million compared to $382.5 million in September the previous year, up $27.7 million equivalent to 7.2 percent. The number of vessels crossing the canal amounted to 1,513 ships in September compared to 1,454 ships in the same month the previous year, up 4.1 percent. The Canal has also seen an increase in net tonnage increased by 13.1 percent, with total cargo in September of this year at 72.8 million tons compared with 64.4 million tonnes in September 2009, Fadel said. The head of the authority said in a press statement on Saturday that the total statistics of navigation in the Suez Canal during the first nine months of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009 indicate a “significant increase in revenues by 11.7 percent, reaching $3.51 billion compared to $3.14 billion during the same period of 2009.” The number of vessels increased by 4.5 percent, he continued, “where 13,377 vessels crossed the canal during the first 9 months of 2010 compared to 12,803 vessels during the same period in 2009, and the total net tonnage increased by 15.6 percent, reaching 622.8 million tons in 2010 compared to 538.5 million tons during the same period in 2009.” BM
