PETA celebrates 30-year anniversary
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have celebrated their 30th year with a red carpet gala in Los Angeles.
The event was attended by several celebrities, showing the deep connection between Hollywood and the premiere animal rights organization.
Alec Baldwin, Pamela Anderson, Anjelica Huston, Kellan Lutz, and Eva Mendes were among the handful of stars that came out to honor PETA and its founder, Ingrid Newkirk, who strolled the red carpet with a giant incarnation of the group's rabbit logo.
UK: Consumer backlash over dairy products
Nocton Dairies want to build the country's largest dairy farm in Britain in Lincolnshire.
Animal rights campaigners claim the plan to house more than 8,100 cows on one farm will lead to “battery farm” conditions.
Now farmers are predicting that consumers will demand “free range milk” in response to the plans.
Lyndon Edwards, the former chairman of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF), said big dairies could be “positive for some farmers that want grow and expand”.
But he warned of a “consumer backlash” that could lead to a demand for “free range milk”.
Ohio: Dairy farmer exposed for cruelty
Earlier this year, Mercy For Animals went undercover and recorded a farm worker abusing cows and calves in the most horrific ways. The expose had people screaming for justice, including Alec Baldwin, who has proven to be an outspoken advocate of animal rights. The footage was horrific to watch, and captured Billy Joe Gregg, Jr. punching calves in the face, repeatedly stabbing them with pitchforks, kicking injured animals too hurt to stand on their own, and twisting cows' tails until their the bone snapped, among other things.
UK: Prankster dyes cat pink
The United Kingdom is buzzing with drama filled animal abuse cases these last few weeks. First there was the woman who threw the cat into a garbage bin. Next was the owner who walked his lame dog to the edge of a busy street and abandoned the animal, and today is the mystery of someone who dyed a young one year-old cat pink.
The RSPCA states the person who did this to the cat is “sick,” and the organization is anxious to find the person who dyed the cat and then threw the cat over a fence in Swindon.
Penny Gillespie, the veterinary surgeon who is caring for the cat now named “Pink” at Cheldene Veterinary and Boarding Cattery in Aldbourner, Marlborough stated the cat is in good health, and whoever dyed the cat was careful as not to get the dye near the cat's eyes or nose. Dr. Gillespie tried to bathe the cat, but has no idea what kind of dye was used, however the dye was not toxic.
Man sentenced to four months over animal abuse in Canada
Windsor, Canada: A Windsor man has been sentenced to four months in jail in a case of animal abuse that outraged the community earlier this year when a dog was found in a schoolyard with its genitals mutilated so badly it had to be put down.
Anjalo Abeywickrema was sentenced in a Windsor courtroom Friday, the CBC reported.
In May, city workers found Tyson Abeywickrema's young black Labrador retriever mix, in a school yard. A condom was involved in the injuries and authorities at the time said they believed something had been tied around the base of the dog's penis for at least 24 hours.
