Solar Water Heaters On The Rise in Egypt
Published in Bikya Masr on 24 - 05 - 2010

CAIRO: Paying your electrical bill can be a painful process. Remembering those endless hours of TV watching, and hot showering you feel like kicking yourself for being the idiot who wanted to use the extra Watts for useless enjoyment. But you're not the only one who wants less of those zeros on your electric bill.
Electricity has become an extra fiscal burden for many Egyptian families and a good chunk of that electricity is spent on heating water. But what if the sun was your new source of electrical heat? Well, many Egyptians are taking advantage of solar energy to heat up their water with nothing else than the new handy dandy solar water heaters.
No, it's not science fiction but fact.
A UNDP report indicates that serious cash is flowing into this operation to provide Egyptian urban and peri-urban areas with solar heated water. In just the first three years after the program's inception in 1998, they managed to garner a total of $65,835 for providing solar heaters in massive numbers. Each solar water heater has the capacity to heat up to 150 liters of water.
Yet, the UNDP is not alone; the Society for Community Welfare and the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services are some of the main participants in this program.
According to this UNDP report, installing solar water heaters can significantly reduce agricultural waste since smoke produced through heating water will significantly drop. Household appliances used for heating water are notorious for their ability to emit massive amounts of greenhouse gasses as they use oil or gas, but soon all of that will be replaced by the 150-liter solar water heater.
A simple overview of how the solar water heater works will show you that it's not rocket science. Solar panels are used to amass huge amounts of solar energy used to heat the water in the tank. It's that simple really!
Now, let's say that you want a solar heating system in your house. You have many choices and installment of a certain type of system is based on the daily and seasonal changes in the exterior temperature as well as the temperature of the water that will be heated.
It's best to turn to the experts. Sun Misr, Olympic Group, and Power Group are some of the main suppliers in Egypt. They provide average Egyptians with the solar water heaters that can carry up to 300 liters of water. So don't forget to contact a supplier near you!
