Egypt's Cabinet approved on Thursday a presidential decree endorsing a new financing agreement with the European Union to implement a programme aimed at improving social and economic conditions in informal and disadvantaged communities. The programme, entitled EU support to the implementation of socio-economic reforms at local level, focuses on enhancing essential services such as education, healthcare and water supply. It will also aim to improve livelihoods, upgrade healthcare quality, and provide targeted support to vulnerable groups, the government said. The programme contributes to the sixth pillar of the EU–Egypt strategic partnership, focused on human capital and demographics, by promoting improved living conditions across the country. The EU programme supports Egypt's broader economic and social reform agenda, addressing challenges stemming from regional and global crises. It is also intended to strengthen social protection by improving access to basic services and economic opportunities, particularly in informal settlements, while linking social development projects to local economic services to ensure sustainability and measurable impact.
