Egypt marked a major milestone in its peaceful nuclear energy programme on Wednesday with the signing of the nuclear fuel purchase order for the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant and a comprehensive cooperation programme agreement with Russia's Rosatom. The event coincided with the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the plant's first nuclear unit, a Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactor, highlighting progress in the project's construction and readiness to move to subsequent implementation stages. The agreements expand Egypt–Russia collaboration beyond nuclear energy to include medical applications such as radioisotope production for cancer treatment, 3D printing for nuclear purposes, and communications technology. The Dabaa project strengthens Egypt's energy transition plans, supports sustainable development, enhances industrial infrastructure, and develops Egyptian expertise in peaceful nuclear technology. This progress continues the Egypt–Russia partnership launched with the 2015 government agreement to build and operate the Dabaa plant, which established the legal framework for Egypt's first nuclear power station.
