According to a statement from the ministry of electricity, the agreements form part of Egypt's national strategy to boost renewable energy generation, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and integrate large-scale energy storage technologies to enhance grid stability and ensure continuous power supply. Under the deals, a 200-megawatt solar plant will be built in Benban, paired with a 120-megawatt-hour battery storage facility, while a 1,000-megawatt solar project and a 600-megawatt-hour battery system will be developed in West Minya. The projects will be implemented according to agreed timelines for connection to the national grid. Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said the projects reflect Egypt's commitment to accelerating its energy transition, with the goal of raising renewable energy's share in the national mix to 42 per cent by 2030 and 65 per cent by 2040. Esmat said the ministry is working to build "a strong and flexible electricity grid capable of absorbing renewable generation capacities, maintaining supply stability, and ensuring efficient energy use through smart grid technologies." He added that the government is encouraging greater private sector participation in renewable and energy storage projects to enhance efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and use stored power during peak hours to support grid stability. The minister emphasised that independent battery storage projects are a "strategic priority" to maximise the use of renewable resources and ensure grid balance as Egypt scales up its clean energy capacity.
