A high-level delegation from China's Xiamen City and the BRICS Centre held talks with Egypt's trade authorities to explore investment opportunities in sectors including mechanised agriculture, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and water desalination, Egypt's Commercial Service (ECS) said Tuesday. The delegation, led by the mayor of Xiamen and the head of the BRICS Centre, met with ECS Head Abdel Aziz El-Sherif, as part of efforts to attract more foreign direct investment. The visit, arranged by the ECS Beijing office, will also include meetings with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) and the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. Officials highlighted Xiamen's economic profile as one of China's earliest special economic zones. The city generated GDP of 858.9 billion yuan ($120 billion) in 2024, while its trade with Egypt rose 20 per cent year on year to 2.31 billion yuan ($1.64 billion). Xiamen's industrial base spans technology, machinery, logistics and finance, with strategic emerging industries such as biomedicine and renewable energy. The Chinese side proposed encouraging companies from both countries to invest in each other's markets, deepening cooperation in digital transformation, and expanding engagement in multilateral frameworks such as BRICS and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Egypt, which views China as a strategic partner, has been courting Asian investment to support infrastructure, green energy and industrial projects, particularly in the Suez Canal corridor.
