Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 12 - 06 - 2025

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Swailem in the capital Kampala.
Foreign Minister Abdel-Aty outlined Egypt's concerns regarding the River Nile and its water security, reiterating Cairo's stance on the need to adhere to international law governing shared water resources. He emphasised that cooperation based on legal principles is essential for mutual benefit, rejecting any unilateral actions that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin. He stressed that Nile waters are a matter of existential importance for Egypt and affirmed the country's right to take all necessary measures under international law to safeguard its water security.
Abdel-Aty also expressed Egypt's aspiration to strengthen regional integration and cooperation among Nile Basin countries to enhance African solidarity and development.
For his part, Egypt's Irrigation Minister Hany Swailem reviewed the ongoing bilateral cooperation and joint water resource projects between Egypt and Uganda. He reiterated that respect for international law forms the foundation of positive collaboration that ensures shared interests across the Nile Basin.
The talks also covered the latest political and security developments in the Horn of Africa, including efforts to combat terrorism and enhance peace and stability across the continent. Both sides agreed to maintain coordination bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks to support joint African action and bolster stability, security, and development.
Abdel-Aty underlined the importance of advancing bilateral cooperation with Uganda across various sectors. He called for leveraging all available opportunities to boost economic relations and trade exchange. He also proposed the establishment of an Egypt-Uganda business council to stimulate investment flows in areas such as construction, energy, pharmaceuticals, and vaccines, serving the mutual interests of both nations.
