Germany voiced support for a reconstruction framework for Gaza led by Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, and the Arab League, while warning that rebuilding the war-ravaged enclave will require a lasting ceasefire and broad international backing. "Gaza lies in ruins — nine out of ten buildings have been destroyed," German Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan said at a press conference in Cairo on Sunday. "Germany is ready to engage as soon as conditions allow, but a permanent ceasefire is essential." Alabali-Radovan said the German government sees Egypt's initiative as a credible platform to begin rebuilding efforts, and stressed the importance of regional and international coordination, including fair burden-sharing. She called for the unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas, including German citizens, and reiterated Berlin's position that Hamas must no longer govern Gaza. The German minister also visited a trauma centre in Cairo where Palestinian children displaced from Gaza are receiving support. "Their stories underscore the urgent need for humanitarian and reconstruction assistance," she said. Germany's development ministry, she added, is ready to act swiftly in coordination with Egypt once a political path forward and security conditions allow reconstruction to begin.
