Egypt municipalities have cleared 7.1 million tons of accumulated waste across 55 sites nationwide, as part of efforts to modernise its solid waste management system, said Local Development Minister Manal Awad, as per a Cabinet statement. The government has handed over 14 mobile and 11 fixed transfer stations to governorates, with four more stations under delivery, along with 36 safe sanitary landfills and 10 waste processing and recycling plants. During her remarks at a Local Administration Committee meeting in the House of Representatives, Awad added that 11 new landfills were completed in eight governorates in FY2024/25 for 710 million Egyptian pounds. Projects currently under construction include eight more landfills in five governorates, and a waste treatment facility in Giza's Shobramant area, designed to handle 640 tons per day and costing 495 million pounds. Awad noted that 36 contracts were signed recently with the private sector — 10 for collection and street cleaning services in seven governorates, and 26 for waste treatment and disposal in 17 governorates, including Cairo, Alexandria, and Sohag.
