Egypt's total number of employees in the public, public enterprise sectors declined to 620,100 in 2024, down from 663,300 in 2023, marking a 6.5 per cent decrease, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). The number of male employees dropped to 544,000 from 580,200, reflecting a 6.2 per cent decline, while female employees fell to 76,100 from 83,200, marking an 8.5 per cent decrease. The housing and construction sector recorded the highest number of employees at 213,100, accounting for 34.4 per cent of the total, followed by the industry and petroleum and mineral resources sectors at 20.4 per cent, and the electricity sector at 18.6 per cent. Cairo had the highest number of public sector employees, with around 222,000 workers representing 35.7 per cent of the total. It was followed by Alexandria with around 61,000 employees, Gharbia with 32,000, Giza with 28,000, and Qalyubia with 22,000. Executive roles accounted for the highest share of employment at 37.2 per cent, while senior management positions recorded the lowest share at 1.6 per cent.
