The United States has signalled it may lift a 10 per cent tariff on Egyptian exports if Cairo removes certain non-tariff barriers in its domestic market, a senior trade official said on Tuesday. Yahya Elwathik Bellah, head of Egypt's Commercial Representation Authority, said Egyptian officials engaged with their US counterparts following the recent imposition of new US tariffs. "The American side indicated that the 10 per cent tariff could be withdrawn if Egypt addresses some of the non-tariff obstacles currently present in the local market," El-Wathiq Bellah said. He made the remarks during a seminar hosted by the Egyptian Centre for Economic Studies (ECES), where discussions centred around Egypt's position amid global trade shifts and increasing protectionist measures.
