Egypt, Somalia elevate ties to strategic partnership
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 23 - 01 - 2025

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Somali President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Cairo, marking a significant step in strengthening Egypt-Somalia relations. The two leaders held bilateral and expanded talks, culminating in the signing of a joint political declaration to elevate ties to a strategic partnership. Several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were also signed, covering areas such as diplomatic training and visa exemptions for diplomatic passport holders.
During a joint press conference, President Sisi emphasised the deep-rooted ties between Egypt and Somalia, noting that the visit reflects the shared commitment to advancing mutual interests. The discussions focused on regional security, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, with both leaders agreeing to intensify efforts to maintain peace and stability in these critical areas. They also highlighted the progress made since the Asmara Summit in October 2024, which brought together Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea, and agreed to hold a second trilateral summit to further enhance coordination.
On bilateral relations, the leaders reviewed economic cooperation, including the successful launch of EgyptAir's Cairo-Mogadishu route, and agreed to strengthen ties in health, judicial cooperation, and capacity building. Military cooperation was also a key topic, with both sides committing to implementing the military cooperation protocol signed in August 2024 to enhance Somalia's security capabilities and combat terrorism.
President Sisi addressed Egypt's potential participation in the new African Union mission in Somalia, stressing that it aims to support peace and stability without threatening any nation. He reiterated Egypt's solidarity with Somalia, noting that its security is integral to Egypt's national security.
The visit concluded with the signing of agreements to enhance political coordination and diplomatic training, marking a new chapter in Egypt-Somalia relations. President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for Somalia, pledging to work together for further achievements.
