QatarEnergy announced on Monday a strategic partnership with TotalEnergies to develop a 1.25 GW solar power project in Iraq. The project is part of the larger Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), which aims to develop Iraq's natural resources and reduce gas flaring. Under the agreement, QatarEnergy will acquire a 50 per cent stake in the solar project, while TotalEnergies will retain the remaining 50 per cent. The project will utilise 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers, providing clean energy to approximately 350,000 homes in the Basra region. QatarEnergy's Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said the partnership would contribute to Iraq's energy security and sustainable development. This solar power project is a key component of the GGIP, which involves the development of Iraq's natural resources and the reduction of gas flaring in the Basra region. The project is expected to be implemented in phases between 2025 and 2027. In June last year, QatarEnergy announced that it had entered into a consortium to implement the GGIP in Iraq, with a 25 per cent participating interest, together with TotalEnergies (45 per cent) and Iraq's Basra Oil Company (30 per cent).
