A joint parliamentary committee has received 210 proposals for setting standards of the constituent assembly that will write Egypt's new constitution, a parliamentary source told MENA Thursday, the last day for submissions. On Tuesday, the joint committee complained that it had not received any proposals from citizens or the Judges Club. The committee said it received 55 proposals on Monday and Tuesday, all of which were submitted by either MPs or members of political parties. It is unclear if any citizens or the Judges Club submitted any of the additional 155 proposals on Wednesday or Thursday. Article 60 of the March 2011 Constitutional Declaration states that the Parliament should elect 100 people to write Egypt's new constitution. Its lack of specification has sparked widespread disagreement on how to go about the process of selecting the constituent assembly. Secular and liberal political forces have also expressed fear that the Parliament's Islamist majority will dominate the process of drafting the constitution.
