Hosni Mubarak and wife questioned on illegal gains charges
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 12 - 05 - 2011

The Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) has announced that a team of investigators travelled on Thursday to the city of Sharm el-Sheikh to conduct extensive questioning of former President Hosni Mubarak and his wife Suzanne.
In a statement, IGA Director Assem al-Gohari said that Mubarak and his wife would be questioned in relation to charges of illegal acquisition of wealth.
Gohari went on to say that Mubarak and his wife face charges of abusing their presidential influence to gain their fortune, which is not commensurate with their legal sources of income. He added that the team of investigators began their first interrogation sessions with Mubarak and his wife on Thursday evening, noting that the IGA would issue a statement after the questioning was finished to announce the outcome.
Meanwhile, a judicial source said that Mubarak would be questioned on the findings of the Administrative Control Authority, which reported he “possesses a number of palaces, villas and bank accounts in Egyptian banks.”
Investigations by the IGA revealed that Hosni Mubarak had personal access to the US$145 million bank account of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), and not his wife, Suzanne, as was previously reported.
According to sources, the IGA investigations also revealed that Mubarak owned vast areas of land in Cairo and other governorates.
Meanwhile, Suzanne Mubarak is being questioned in relation to several lawsuits, in which she is accused of illegally acquiring her wealth through the exploitation of her husband's authority as well as abusing the BA bank account.
The Egyptian public prosecutor is investigating Hosni Mubarak on charges of aggression and of killing peaceful protesters during the 25 January revolution, as well as of abusing public funds and abusing his authority to illegally gain commissions and other benefits.
