Security authorities in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate have warned of plans by elements of the ousted regime to provoke unrest during the Hurgada International Squash Championship, which is due to run from 12 May to 19 May. The authorities warned that a number of young members of the disbanded National Democratic Party (NDP) and several former NDP members of parliament closely linked with the party's former general secretary, Safwat al-Sherif, and its former secretary of organization, Ahmed Ezz, are planning to create chaos at the event. Both Sherif and Ezz are currently remanded in custody, pending investigations over financial corruption. According to a security source, a number of Facebook pages created by "NDP elements" have called on youths to stage protests during the championship, which will be aired on a number of European TV channels, in a bid to disrupt the city's security situation. Remnants from the previously ruling NDP are frequently blamed for much of the unrest that has struck Egypt since the end of the 25 January revolution, which forced former President Hosni Mubarak from power on 11 February. Earlier this week, a source at the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces accused elements from the NDP of provoking sectarian clashes on Saturday in Imbaba, northwest Cairo, leading to the death of 15 and the injury of nearly 240.
