Muslim Brotherhood to decide on new legal status

The Muslim Brotherhood is currently examining its legal status to decide if it should become a civil society organization, having been banned during the rule of toppled president Hosni Mubarak.
Karem Radwan, a member of its Shura Council, said a legal committee is currently considering suggestions regarding the Brotherhood's legal status.
Mohamed Gamal Heshmat, also a member of its Shura Council, said the legal status of the Brotherhood will be examined after its political party, the Freedom and Justice Party, has been established. The Brotherhood may become an NGO, but a conclusive decision on this has not yet been made, he added.
Abdel Monem Abdel Maqsoud, a lawyer for the group, confirmed that one of the statuses being considered is that of an NGO. He added that the group will await the new law on NGOs, which will be issued after the parliamentary elections, or until a recommendation is made for the new law.
The other option, he added, is to implement the ruling issued in 1992 - which dismissed a case that called for the dissolution of the Brotherhood - which would mean it would return to its legal status of 1928.
