At an organized vigil in front of the Saint Mark's Cathedral in Cairo on Wednesday, scores of Copts called for a demonstration Friday in response to Salafi religious intolerance and violence against Egypt's Christian minority. The demonstration comes after Salafis organized a sit-in outside the church last Friday to demand the release of Camilia Shehata, a priest's wife who is thought to have converted to Islam and allegedly detained by the Coptic Church. Coptic activist Ramy Kamel said the demonstration would take the form of a prayer before Pope Shenouda's weekly sermon. The armed forces and the police increased their presence at the cathedral in Abbasseya to avoid any possible clashes. Coptic Christians in Beni Suef also reported to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl named Samar Kamel who has been missing since Saturday.
