Opposition and independent MPs have notified Cairo's head of security of their intention to hold a peaceful march on 3 May to demand an end to the state of emergency, amendment of Articles 76, 77 and 88 of the Constitution, amendment of the law on exercising political rights, and the release of all political prisoners. The march is scheduled to proceed from Omar Makram Mosque in Tahrir Square to the People's Assembly, where the marchers will present their demands to People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour. MPs who signed the memorandum--including independent MPs Alaa Abdel Monem and Gamal Zahran, Karama Party MPs Hamdein Sabbahi and Saad Abboud, and Brotherhood MPs Mohamed el-Beltagui and Hamdi Hassan--urged the Interior Ministry to protect them during the march, saying that some 500 MPs and political figures of different orientations will participate in the march. They also warned the ministry against using violence against protesters and preventing the media from covering the march. Abdel Monem said the legal procedures to organize the march have been followed and added that the demands they plan to submit to Sorour represent the views of different political factions in Egypt. El-Beltagui clarified that permission has not been requested to stage the march, but rather the Interior Ministry has been notified of the intention to organize it.
