Turkish President Abdullah Gul reached Cairo Thursday for a short visit that includes talks with the head of the Egyptian Supreme Armed Forces Council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, along with other Egyptian officials and activists. Egypt was the first Arab country Gul visited after being elected in 2007, and he is also the first head of state to visit Egypt after President Hosni Mubarak's resignation. Gul wants to show solidarity with the Egyptian people during this critical period and to express his wishes for a better and more powerful Egypt, read a statement issued by his offices. Egyptians deserve to live in a democratic country where everyone abides by the law, said Gul. Turkey was the first country to explicitly support the Egyptian revolution and the demands of the Egyptian people. In the early days of the Egyptian revolution, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan called on Mubarak to listen to the demands of the people.
