Ruling party MP Zakaria Azmy has asked Parliamentary Speaker Fathi Sorour to file a lawsuit against Al-Masry Al-Youm for publishing "defamatory" cartoons lambasting Egypt's parliament. “As I understand it, the cartoons portray parliamentarians as cats and dogs,” said Azmy, who went on to stress his respect for press freedoms--as long as those freedoms were used for constructive purposes. Azmy insisted that Egypt's recently concluded parliamentary elections had been conducted in a "free and fair" manner. “We haven't received a single lawsuit challenging the assembly's legitimacy,” he said. Sorour has reportedly referred Azmy's complaint to a parliamentary media committee for review. Translated from the Arabic Edition.
