Confidential documents released by online whistle-blower Wikileaks have served to bolster the credibility of the Egyptian regime, a leading member of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) said this week. "The documents show that what Egypt says behind closed doors is the same as what it says in public," Mustafa al-Fiqi, chairman of the Shura Council's Foreign Relations Committee, said. According to al-Fiqi, the documents also serve to illustrate that Egypt "is not like other countries, whose surprising positions and confidential discussions have been exposed." With regards to Egyptian presidential elections slated for next year, al-Fiki said: “So far, President Hosni Mubarak is the NDP's candidate for the presidency, unless he himself decides otherwise.” Al-Fiqi concluded by saying that he did not expect the incoming parliament to be dissolved as a result of electoral violations that reportedly took place during recently-concluded parliamentary polling and the several Administrative Court rulings that invalidated vote results in certain districts.
