General Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud on Saturday referred a National Democratic Party (NDP) leader and two journalists to criminal court for insulting judge Walid al-Shafey. Al-Shafey publicly claimed 2010 parliamentary elections were flawed. Mo'mena Kamel, an NDP victor in 6th October, described the judge as “an insane and retarded liar.” The judge submitted a report to heads of the High Elections Committee (HEC) and other election committees, saying he witnessed vote manipulation in favor of the NDP's two female candidates, Mo'mena Kamel and Nermine Badrawy, while supervising elections in 6th October. In the same context, the General Prosecutor decided on Saturday to refer Al-Shorouk editor-in-chief Amr Khafagi and Al-Shorouk reporter Hesham al-Mayani for speedy trial at Giza Criminal Court. Both defendants will post bail of LE20,000. Kamel will face trial at the Cairo Court of Appeals. The date will be determined once case-related reports arrive to the court. Khafagi and al-Mayani are accused of libel and slander after publishing an interview in which Kamel insulted a civil servant performing his election supervising duties.
