The opposition and independent blocs within Egypt's incoming parliament are set to look considerably different after 15 prominent opposition and independent MPs lost seats in Sunday's elections for the People's Assembly. Independent/opposition parliamentarians to have lost seats include Mostafa Bakry, Alaa Abdel Moneim, Gamal Zahran, Saad Abboud, Mohamed al-Omda and Mostafa al-Guindi. MPs representing the banned-but-tolerated Muslim Brotherhood (MB) opposition group to have lost seats, meanwhile, include Saad al-Katatny; Hamdi Hassan; Saad al-Husseiny; Akram al-Shaer; Sobhi Saleh; Mohsen Rady; Farid Ismail; Sabry Khalafallah; Azab Mostafa; Gamal Hanafy; Adel Hamed; Hassanein al-Shoury; and Ahmed Diab. Thirteen MB candidates, however, are slated to vie for seats in runoff elections. Only one MP from the secular opposition, Ragab Helal Hemeida of the Musa Mostafa faction of the liberal Ghad Party, won outright. Fourteen others will be competing in runoffs, including Hamdin Sabbahy, Mohamed Abdel Abdel Alim Dawood, Kamal Ahmed, Tarek Sabbaq, Al-Sayed Askar, Mohamed al-Beltagi, Hazem Farouk, Yousri Bayoumy, Magdy Ashour, Alam Eddin al-Sakhawy, Ashraf Badr Eddin, Yousri Teekab, Mahmoud Atteya and Abdel Latif Qutb. Opposition MPs from outside parliament to have suffered electoral defeats in Sunday's races include Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour, Mohamed Anwar al-Sadat, Mahmoud al-Saqqa, Al-Badry Farghaly, Mohamed Kamel, Gamila Ismail and Taher Abu Zeid.
