Egyptian police have broken up a demonstration of 90 workers from the Land Improvement Authority, who have been staging a sit-in before the parliament building for nine days. Only ten protesters were allowed to continue, on condition that they do not shout anti-government slogans. The protesters were demanding better wages and social security. In related developments, 200 nurses of Mahalla Chest Hospital went on strike for three days, also demanding better salaries and bonuses, while more than 300 coal workers protested in Sharqiya against the governor closing down their workshops. In Cairo, residents of Manshiyet Nasser district on Tuesday agreed to suspend their protests after their representative in parliament promised to stop home demolition orders that were issued for their houses and to provide them with alternative housing units.
