Muslim Brotherhood protests held across Alexandria, clashes erupt
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 07 - 11 - 2010

The Muslim Brotherhood on Saturday held 13 protests in Alexandria amid heightened security. Protesters raised flags and placards with pictures and slogans of Brotherhood parliamentary candidates while chanting campaign maxims.
Eyewitnesses said fierce clashes between protesters and security contingents took place in Mina al-Basal. Violence broke out in Bab al-Sharque and Karmouz districts, as well, after security forced demonstrators to end their protest. Ensuing clashes left store facades reportedly damaged.
The demonstrations kicked off simultaneously in Amriya, Agami, Wardiyan, Bahari, al-Attareen,Moharam Bek, Gherbal, Karmouz, Bab Sharque, Seedi Gaber, Smouha, al-Raml and al-Montazah districts. Protesters were estimated at 20,000, including men, women and children.
In Mina al-Basal, police blocked all roads leading to Maks street and surrounded 2000 protesters in a rally led by Hassan Hamdy. The demonstration aimed to inform Alexandrians that all Brotherhood candidacy applications were accepted, Hamdy told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The Brotherhood staged protests on Friday against reported rejection of Brotherhood applications.
Nominal security at Raml station permitted demonstrations to continue for more than two hours. In other areas, protests were held without clashes.
The Brotherhood previously announced it intends to field candidates in six electoral districts in Alexandria.
