Brotherhood students sponsor rallies at universities across Egypt
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 01 - 11 - 2010

Students affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood on Monday held pro-Muslim Brotherhood campaigns at various universities across Egypt.
Brotherhood students at Al-Azhar University in Cairo held a festival as part of their campaign titled "Reformers" to promote the the group's candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections. At the same time Brotherhood students at the University of Alexandria launched a new campaign titled "We will clean it up" that aims to fight corruption and support reformers in the November elections.
Coincidentally, 73 students from Cairo and Mansoura universities were referred to investigation.
"The purpose behind the campaign is to educate students on the importance of actively participating in the upcoming elections," said Mohamed Shehata, the spokesman for Brotherhood affiliated students at the University of Alexandria.
The campaign also seeks to encourage students "to get a voting card to support and vote for the reformers in the elections and to fight corruption and corruptors and help overthrow them," he added.
Muslim Brotherhood students at Al-Azhar University in Assiut organized an art festival and a photo exhibition depicting the group's origins and history. The students began their exhibition, despite heightened security, by presenting a short video revealing the beginnings of the group and the assassination of its founder Hassan al-Banna.
The festival also highlighted Muslim Brotherhood student activities at the different universities and promoted the Muslim Brotherhood parliamentary candidates.
Shahib Marwan, Brotherhood spokesman at Al-Azhar University, Assiut said the events come as part of the "Reformers" campaign launched earlier this year. The campaign aims to clear up suspicions surrounding the group following the government's slander campaign, he added.
At Cairo University's Faculty of Commerce, 53 Muslim Brotherhood students were referred to investigation on charges of putting up banners containing religious slogans without prior permission.
Mansoura University also referred 20 Muslim Brotherhood students to investigation after they held a political conference titled "A free university and a free country"--also without permission.
