Indian tanker fined for polluting Red Sea
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 04 - 03 - 2010

The state-run Red Sea Environmental Affairs Agency has fined the owners of an Indian oil tanker LE600,000 for causing damage to the local marine environment in the Ras Gharib region of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
Large quantities of oil reportedly leaked from the tanker, called the Abul Kalam Azad, as a result of bad weather while it was loading cargo last week. Leaked oil subsequently spread over an estimated 6000 square meters of water off the coast.
The decision to fine the vessel's owners was taken after local authorities reported the issue to Environment Minister Maged George. The state-run General Petroleum Corporation has also filed a police report on the incident.
