Scores of people gathered yesterday before Tala Police Station, Menoufia in protest against the death of a citizen and injury of two others in the police station. Mohamed Ibrahim Hamid, a victim's uncle, said he was stunned by a telephone call from the police station telling him that 25-year-old Ramadan Ibrahim died and two others were injured after being arrested on charge of raping Afaf Hassan. “Hassan accused Ibrahim because there are differences between them, as the victim's brother accused Hassan of kidnapping his son seven months ago,” Hamid said. "When I went to the hospital, I found Ibrahim dead and naked," he said, adding that the police practiced pressure on them to take the victim's body in exchange for releasing the other two defendants who were also taken to Tala hospital, but the victim's relatives refused. For his part, public relations officer at Menoufia Security Major Ahmed Tharwat said the three suspects had been arrested on charge of beating and raping a woman. While being transported to the prosecution, the victim died from a heart attack, he said, refusing to comment on reports that they were tortured in the police station.
On the other hand, some 500 lawyers staged a sit-in in Kafr El-Sheikh Court of First Instance after two of their colleagues had been attacked by the police.
