The Press Syndicate's Disciplinary Body held its first meeting last Monday under the chairmanship of the syndicate's undersecretary Salah Abdel Maqsoud. The body examined two cases and set December 22nd as a date for issuing a ruling on one of them. In addition, it will consider two cases next Monday. Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Abdel Maqsoud said all six cases referred to this body are related to libel, slander and breaching the press code of ethics. Names of newspapers and journalists who were referred for investigation will be announced if and after they are convicted. The disciplinary body resumed its work after a 20-year-long suspension.
The prosecution had referred 38 publishing-related issues to the Press Syndicate, as Public Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud called on the syndicate's head Makram Mohamed Ahmed to deal with these issues instead of referring them to courts.
On the other hand, the syndicate's Undersecretaries Abdel Mohsen Salama and Salah Abdel Maqsoud received the father of the murdered girl Nadin Ahmad Gamal and his lawyer Issam Shiha, who submitted a memo to the Press Syndicate against 22 newspapers that published news about the murder of Nadin and her friend Heba at Al-Nada Village at Sheikh Zayed.
The syndicate's board of directors is expected to discuss the memo filed by Shiha in its next meeting.
