Quranist Movement leader Ahmed Sobhy Mansour, who is now in the United States, threatened to sue the Egyptian regime before the International Criminal Court (ICC) under the pretext that it commits anti-humanity crimes. The Quranic Studies Center, an affiliate to the Quranist Movement in the United States, issued a statement accusing the Egyptian authorities of kidnapping and torturing the Egyptian blogger Reda Abdel Rahman Ali, who belongs to the group. The statement stressed that the center will take all necessary steps to sue the Egyptian authorities before the ICC due to this "anti-humanity crime" as it put it. The statement added that Mansour called on human rights organizations to help him release Ali, pointing out that the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 20, 2006, confirms that forced disappearance is a crime against humanity.
"This means that we will be able to sue senior officials in the Egyptian government before the ICC to ensure that this crime will not go unpunished," the statement said.
Adel Ramadan, the lawyer of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, which is responsible for defending the Quranist movement members, said: "This statement was issued before the disappearance of the kidnapped blogger last Saturday. He is now detained in Tora Prison to be referred to the State Supreme Security Court on December 14 on charges of blaspheming religions. "
Mansour's threat to sue the Egyptian regime needs legal review, as things are not that simple, he said.
In a phone call with Al-Masry Al-Youm, Mansour said: "We categorically reject using violence and weapons in dealing with the ruling regime. We do not have any political ambition or aspiration like the Shiites, who may have a foreign agenda and resort to a regional power, which is known by all people and feared by the system."
