The National Democratic Party (NDP) has decided to re-open some nomination spots to encourage stronger candidacies for the People's Assembly elections slated for November, sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm. Among those who submitted their nomination papers after the deadline expired are former Head of the Supply Investigations Office Mohamed Abu Shadi, former Governor of Daqahliya Mohamed al-Shennawi, and Deputy People's Assembly Speaker Zeinab Radwan. The source said NDP leaders are coordinating efforts with some members of their party who decided to run as independent candidates to ensure party votes aren't splintered. The party is also communicating with NDP members who declined to stand in the elections after a new party rule was passed requiring candidates to sign a document pledging not to run as independent candidates if the NDP does not approve their nomination. The total number of NDP nominees throughout Egypt has reached 2788, with an average of six candidates for every seat--a lower number than during the previous election.
