Cairo - Al-Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb expressed readiness to train Swedish preachers on countering extremism and to offer scholarships to Muslims in Sweden to study at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. "Al-Azhar's main mission is to spread peace in the world," El-Tayeb said during a meeting on Thursday, June 1, 2017, with Swedish Ambassador to Egypt, Charlotta Sparre. El-Tayeb further revealed a plan to organize a two-month course for Swedish Muslim clerics to train them on how to be an integral part of the Swedish community. "Al-Azhar has always been keen on upgrading its curricula to protect youths from extremist thoughts," El-Tayeb pointed out. Sparre, meanwhile, expressed her desire to get familiar with Al Azhar's vision for spreading peace and promoting peaceful coexistence, adding that her country seeks to make use of Al-Azhar's expertise in countering terrorism and extremism. Al-Azhar University has some 450,000 students, many from countries across Asia and Africa. It also has a network of more than 9,000 schools across Egypt attended by more than two million students.
