A huge blaze and violent clashes destroyed major parts of the Grande-Synthe migrant camp, outside the northern French city of Dunkirk and wounded six migrants earlier on Tuesday, firefighters and local French authorities said. Prior to the blaze, clashes erupted between security forces and more than one hundred immigrants, leaving six immigrants injured, authorities added. Police said an injured immigrant, who is in a critical condition now, was hit by a car on a highway outside the immigrant camp. Three others were stabbed during the fight. A humanitarian relief group said the fire destroyed wooden cabins, the only shelter for immigrants. Total number of immigrants in the camp ranged from 1000 to 15000, mostly Kurds. Last week, immigrants from Grande-Synthe attempted to infiltrate Britain through the English Channel, which separates southern England from northern France. For more than a decade, France's northern coast has been a focal point for refugees and migrants who are trying to reach the UK, with French authorities repeatedly tearing down camps in the region. Most immigrants, who escape from violence and bad economic conditions, originally come from North Africa and The Middle East.
