Cairo - Yesterday's evening a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale felt in several provinces across Egypt for the fourth time during the month of January. "The first quake reached as far as greater Cairo area away from its epicenter which was in the Mediterranean, and was felt by some people in Cairo," ‘Dr. Hatem Auda', President of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research (NIAGR) told Albawaba News Portal. Dr. Auda affirmed that the institute has issued a formal statement including details of the earthquake, which occurred at 8:50:52 in the evening and lasted for about 20 minutes, pointing out that there hadn't been any loss, damage or casualties. He added that the analysis of this earthquake indicated that the location of the quake was at latitude 35.22 degrees north and longitude 26.66 degrees east, at a depth of 35 kilometers underwater, east of the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean. Dr. Hatem noted that the entire Mediterranean region is considered by seismologists as an active seismic focus as it is one of the well-known earthquake epicenters in the world. He pointed out that any earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale will definitely have several aftershocks that may last for two days, but it will not felt.
