Egypt has been chosen to head 3 United Nations' Security Council Committees, including Counterterrorism Committee, Iraq Sanctions Committee, Democratic Republic of Congo Sanctions Committee, according to Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs' spokesperson. Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid announced through his official Twitter account that Egypt will preside the 3 committees starting from January 2016. Egypt won the bid over unanimous voting, where all countries, including permanent members such as U.S., Russia, France, UK and China voted. The counterterrorism committee was established in 2001, following the incidents of September 11 in the U.S. Egypt has locked a two-year, non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council after 179 of the 193 UN member states voted in favor of its membership on October 15.
