An oil leakage in the River Nile was detected Friday coming from Hamara power plant in Assiut governorate, the state-run MENA reported. Egypt Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center affirmed that the Central Operation Room has monitored separate oil spots of 1.5 kilometers long and 3-4 meters wide on the river coast off the power plant. Immediately upon detecting the leakage spot, a commission was formed from Environment Affairs Service, Water Bodies Police and Holding Company for Water and Wastewater to follow the cleaning process of the affected area. Meanwhile, Ministry of Environment sent a notification to Cairo, Giza, Minya and Beni Suef governorates to take precautionary measure to prevent the oil leakage from reaching local water stations feeding these provinces.
