Andy Burnham has declared he is willing to block military action against Isis in Syria, in a further blow to David Cameron's hopes of extending the bombing campaign. The Labour leadership contender has suggested that it might prove to be illegal because Britain did not have an invitation from President Assad's regime. Mr Burnham is seeking to close the gap with Jeremy Corbyn, the hard-left candidate and Stop the War veteran who opposes the bombing of Isis targets with British aircraft. "The tests are quite big. There's a very large one about legality first...This isn't an invitation by a democratic government to come in, is it? I'm struggling with that myself," he told the Huffington Post. The Shadow Health Secretary also warned David Cameron against trying to "bounce" Labour into supporting a strike by calling a parliamentary vote immediately after the result of the Labour leadership election.
