E.U. counter-terrorism coordinator, Gilles de Kerchove warned that social media can be used as a tool to recruit new militants for terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State (IS), Al Bawaba News reported Thursday. "IS organization still poses a threat to the E.U. as it continues to recruit young people in many ways, most importantly through social media such as Twitter and Facebook, increasing pressure on the European authorities to limit the use of the extremists as a major platform for recruitment and fundraising," Al Arabiya News T.V. quoted de Kerchove as saying. These sites receive judicial warnings of facing more stringent governmental monitoring if it fails to apply the standards to identify and eliminate terrorist activities on their networks, he addded, indicating the Online Counter-terrorism Unit in Britain could remove nine thousand terrorist pages and tweets over the past five years.
